Seeing With My Eyes Closed
An investigation into consciousness and collaboration with The Sussex Centre For Consciousness Science
Anniek Verholt is a Brighton and Athens based multidisciplinary artist (MA, 2004) with a background in therapeutic arts (BA in Art Therapy, 2000). Her ongoing work, which explores the intersection between art and psychology, has led her to investigate questions about consciousness and perception—how we experience the world, understand ourselves, and, in the context of art, the relationship between an artwork and its beholder.
Over the past year, Verholt has collaborated with Prof. Anil Seth and the neuroscience lab at the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. She attended talks, seminars, and made multiple visits to the lab, where she became intrigued by their experiments involving stroboscopic light. She participated in over 10 supervised strobe sessions, each offering a unique visual experience, all equally fascinating. Anniek further reflected on these experiences in her studio and began creating a new body of work titled "Seeing with My Eyes Closed".
Her sketches and water colour studies have developed into large paintings occupying both of her studio's in Brighton and Athens. A lot of her research, sketches and smaller works are created in her studio in Brighton while her Athens studio allows her to develop larger paintings.
In order to align with her own visual responses to the stroboscopic sessions Anniek had to move away from her comforting blue's and embraced a more vivid and bright colour palette. Find a few examples below.
